Klaus Opitz began his musical training with Jörg Heyer at the Frankfurt Musikhochschule before continuing his studies at the Hochschule Mozarteum in Salzburg with Thomas Riebl, graduating with distinction.
This was followed by intensive concert activity as a member of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, the Camerata Academica of the Mozarteum (Sándor Végh), the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart (Hellmuth Rilling) and the Mutare-Ensemble Frankfurt (G. Müller-Hornbach). Since 1995 Klaus Opitz has been principal viola in the Darmstadt State Orchestra.
Initially a lecturer at the HfMDK Frankfurt, he has taught viola at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt since 2006. With the Darmstadt Baroque Soloists, of which Klaus Opitz is a founding member, he received the Darmstadt Music Prize in 2016.
