As part of an exhibition in honour of the artist Roma Engelmann, a concert with works by Hans Ulrich Engelmann will take place on 12 June 2026 at 6 pm. In the lecture hall of the House of Literature students and graduates of Akademie für Tonkunst will perform under the direction of Prof Sun-Young Nam. They will perform chamber music works by the Darmstadt composer and provide a brief insight into his musical oeuvre. The programme also includes a work for which a manuscript was only recently discovered during research in the archives of the Darmstadt International Music Institute and for which no performance dates are known.
Hans Ulrich Engelmann is a composer from Darmstadt who was born in 1921. He grew up at Rhönring 14 in Darmstadt, where there is now a stumbling block for his father, who was murdered in the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1945. Engelmann's talent on the piano was recognised at an early age. His musical role models included the composers René Leibowitz and Ernst Krenek, who awakened his fondness for twelve-tone music. But he also had intensive contact with the Darmstadt jazz scene throughout his life. Engelmann's compositional oeuvre comprises more than 100 works in a wide variety of genres. He died in Darmstadt in 2011.
The Concert on 12 June 2026 with works by Hans Ulrich Engelmann is part of an exhibition in honour of the artist Roma Engelmann (1922 - 2023). The exhibition is on display from 8 May to 4 September 2026 at the Art Archive Darmstadt on display. It includes works with textiles, works on canvas and a mosaic from the Engelmanns' house, which had been forgotten and was recovered for the exhibition so that it can now be seen in an exhibition for the first time. Roma Engelmann was married to the composer Hans Ulrich Engelmann from 1953. She lived with him for over 50 years in the New Artists' Colony in Darmstadt in a house and studio in Rosenhöhe Park.
