Concert series to mark the 170th anniversary of Robert Schumann's death starts on 14 March 2026

Robert Schumann is one of the most important composers of the Romantic period. His music is particularly characterised by poetry and literature. The works of Jean Paul, E.T.A. Hoffmann and Heinrich Heine in particular influenced him and his musical language. As founder and editor of the „Neue Zeitschrift für Musik“, he also wrote himself and helped shape the musical discourse of his time like almost no other composer of the 19th century. His musical output is enormous: in addition to stage works, oratorios and around 100 choral works, Robert Schumann composed more than 300 songs, over 300 piano works, dozens of chamber music works and numerous orchestral works, including four symphonies, seven instrumental concertos and concert pieces as well as several overtures.

This year marks the 170th anniversary of Schumann's death. The Akademie für Tonkunst is taking this as the occasion for a 5-part concert series. The concerts will provide insights into the composer's extensive oeuvre. Students and teachers of the Akademie für Tonkunst will be performing.

The first concert will take place on 14 March 2026 and is entitled „Magic of the Imagination“. On the Programme include the Phantasiestücke op. 12 for piano solo, the Phantasiestücke op. 73 for violoncello and piano as well as songs and duets.
