Akademie für Tonkunst: History, passion and education

Welcome to the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt!

At the start of the New semesters and after the Summer break we would like to revive the history of our academy - a history that began in 1851 and continues to this day.

A look into the past

Founded by Philipp Carl Schmitta passionate violinist in the grand ducal court orchestra, started the academy as a simple piano school. Schmitt and his mother Henriette introduced new teaching methods at the time, which included group lessons, ensemble playing and sight-reading. These innovative concepts not only fostered the students' musical abilities, but also created a strong sense of community.

Already 1858 the first public concerts took place, giving the pupils the opportunity to present themselves to an audience without the pressure of examinations. The number of pupils grew rapidly - from 16 in the founding year to an impressive 160 in 1869.

Milestones of the Academy

1878 the "Philipp Schmitt'sche Academie für Tonkunst" was founded and divided into two departments: one for professional musicians and one for amateurs. This structure is still in place today and ensures a diverse learning environment. After the First World War, the academy flourished thanks to various reforms and expansions, and in 1931 it was recognised as a university.

Founded in 1926, the opera school regularly demonstrated its progress in public performances and enjoyed great popularity. The Academy concerts, which featured well-known soloists, also contributed to the Academy's appeal.

The full history of the academy is available here available.
