Improvisation played a major role in music until the Romantic Period. Just two prominent masters of improvisation were Bach and Mozart. Bach could improvise entire Fugues and Mozart improvised all of his piano cadenzas in concert. In the classical music world today, improvisation has essentially disappeared. In this specialty there is room for every kind of experiment, whereby this begins with exploring the possibilities of one’s own instrument or voice. What sounds can be produced outside the well known classical traditions? Through experimentation the student suddenly finds himself in the realm of New Music and can better understand what composers request. Performing without written music and creating a spontaneous musical form in the objective of this course.
